Artwork by detained opposition leader get German exhibit

Germany’s Academy of Arts launched an exhibit of works by Iranian opposition leader MirHosein Mousavi on June 6, which will remain open to the public until June 23.

The show will present a selection of 28 works of art by MirHosein Mousavi, the Iranian opposition leader and candidate in the 2009 presidential election who is currently under house arrest in Iran together with his wife, Zahra Rahnavard.

Klaus Staeck, the president of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, has extended an invitation to Mousavi to attend the show, even though Mousavi and Rahnavard have not been allowed to attend any public gatherings since they were put under house arrest in February 2011.

Ardeshir Amirarjmand, the spokesman for the Coordination Council for the Green Path of Hope, and Iranian Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi accompanied Staeck to a panel discussion of Mousavi and Rahnavard’s situation under house arrest and the issues of freedom of expression faced by Iranian artists.
