Iran denies breaking UN rules with rocket tests

Iran’s foreign minister reacted to the recent joint letter sent by the U.S., UK, France and Germany to the UN challenging Iran’s rocket tests, saying those tests do not contravene any UN resolutions and that Iran’s military power is only defensive.

On his Twitter page, Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed on Wednesday March 30 that those who accuse Iran of provocative actions should remember the words of the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards: Iran only uses “military power for its defence”.

He stressed that neither the recent nuclear agreement nor the UN resolution prevents Iran from using rockets that are not designed for carrying nuclear heads.

The U.S., UK, France and Germany claim the rockets have the capability to carry nuclear heads and want the UN to provide Iran with an appropriate response.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon says Iran’s actions have been cause for “fear and concerns”, adding that the UN response will depend on the decisions of the Security Council.

Zarif added that Iran has not attacked any country in the past 250 years and if it had possessed similar rockets in the 1980s, Iraq would not have dared to initiate its eight-year war against Iran.

Zarif has been quoted as saying that Iran will continue strengthening its military defence capabilities.
