Prisoners start hunger strike over lack of medical care

Iranian political prisoners Hossein Ronaghi Maleki and Saeed Razavi Faqih are refusing food to protest the lack of adequate medical treatment in prison.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported on Sunday March 27 that Hossein Ronaghi Maleki’s family said the jailed blogger is now in his second day of a hunger strike in Evin Prison.

His father added that if his son does not receive the necessary medical treatment in jail, he too will join his son on his hunger strike.

Prison authorities have not heeded the recommendations of doctors both inside and outside prison and are reportedly not providing him with the necessary medical treatment.

The family reports that Ronaghi Maleki was not even granted leave to spend Norooz holidays with his family.

Hossein Ronaghi Maleki was sentenced to 15 years in jail for running a blog in 2009 commenting on the mass election protests that brought the country into serious crisis for months. He has gone on a hunger strike on several occasions.

Saeed Razavi Faqih is also being denied adequate medical care in Evin Prison and suffers from serious heart complications that need to be regularly monitored.

He was sentenced to one year in jail for “assembly and collusion to disrupt national security” and was to be released in 2014; instead he was slapped with another three and half years in jail for “insulting the leader and the Assembly of Experts, and propagating against the regime”.
