Iran’s Ministry of Education says the penalty for failing to register one’s children in school has been increased to one million toumans in fines and up to three months in prison.
A spokesman for the ministry told the national broadcaster on Saturday March 26 that by law, parents and guardians of school-age children are required to register them in school, and if they prevent their child from attending school, the ministry can file complaints against them that will be streamlined in judicial procedures.
The ministry issued a report last September indicating that 35,000 children at the elementary level and 180,000 at the middle school level are not attending school.
Another 3.2 million fail to attend school at the high school level.
