Brick workers lose jobs due to construction slowdown

Twenty thousand workers at brick kilns in Tehran province have been laid off and only 50 of 400 units remain active due to the widespread decline of construction across the country.

The chief representative for brick kiln workers says the lack of construction has cut the demand for fired bricks. The Tasmin website reports that according to Gholamreza Abbasi, bricks are now being piled in storage and only 50 kilns are working.

A lack of cash flow and doubts about the economic future of the country have left the Iranian housing market at a standstill in recent years.

Thirteen percent of the Iranian labour market is linked to residential construction, and its stagnation has caused serious job losses across the country.
