Leader’s advisor blames West for Syrian migrants

Ali Akbar Velayati

Ali Akbar Velayati, the Iranian Supreme Leader’s advisor on international affairs, says Western countries and Israel are responsible for the displacement of Syrian migrants.

ISNA reports that in a meeting with a parliamentary delegation from Syria on Monday September 7, Velayati referred to the displacement of 10 million Syrians and said: “European countries are making such a fuss over the acceptance of a few thousand Syrian asylum seekers, but those very countries are responsible for the displacement of these people.”

The UN refugee agency reports that three million Syrians have fled their country while more than six million are displaced inside Syria. The report also indicates that since the beginning of the conflict in Syria in 2011, 191,000 people have been killed.

Ali Akbar Velayati stressed: “Iran has supported the Syrian government and will continue its support of Beshar Assad.”

He welcomed the prospect of talks between Syrian opposition forces and representatives of the Assad government, saying it is “the closest solution acceptable to the Syrian government”.

In August, the UN passed a new plan for peace in Syria which was accepted by all members of Security Council.

The plan calls for “the establishment of a transitional governing body, with full executive powers and made up of members of the present government and the opposition and other groups, as part of agreed principles and guidelines for a Syrian-led political transition”.

Velayati told the Syrian delegation that Iran will support the plan that meets the approval of the Syrian government.
