Parliament to weigh in on nuclear pact by fall

Iran’s parliamentary speaker says Parliament will announce its decision in the fall regarding the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 as drafted in Vienna in July.

The Khaneh Mellat website reports that upon his return from New York on Saturday September 5, Ali Larijani said he was aware of the Iranian Supreme Leader’s point of view regarding parliamentary review of the agreement.

Last Thursday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei finally made a statement about Parliament’s role in handling the nuclear agreement, saying it would be inappropriate for Parliament to be prevented from reviewing the draft.

Larijani said that prior to his trip abroad, he had met with Ayatollah Khamenei, who had called for various levels of government to be involved in reviewing the agreement.

He said Parliament has already formed a commission to review the agreement. The commission was announced in early August, and nine of its 15 members are severe critics of the agreement.

Critics of the agreement say the draft needs to be approved by Parliament; however, the administration has been resisting that, saying this is not a treaty or an international convention but simply a comprehensive program of joint actions.
