The German foreign minister will make his first visit to Iran this October, the German News Agency reports.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced on August 24 that he will travel to Tehran because, following the nuclear agreement, he is interested in seeing Iran firsthand.
The last time a German foreign minister travelled to Iran was on February 19, 2011, when Guido Westerwelle made a one-day visit to secure the release of two journalists detained there. The journalists were held for failing to secure a press licence prior to their trip to Iran.
Since the announcement of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 last month, the foreign ministers of France and Britain have already made trips to Tehran, and Europe is looking to expand trade and economic relations with Iran.
