Head of Iranian parliament signals support of nuclear framework

Ali Larijani

Ali Larijani, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, has announced that Parliament is fully supportive of the nuclear negotiating team and regards the Lausanne agreement as “a good sign toward resolving the nuclear issue”.

On Monday April 6, Larijani told MPs that the government’s efforts regarding the nuclear dispute have been positive and the people are happy that “a bright path has been set”.

A spokesman for the conservative faction of Parliament has also announced that the head of Parliament has told MPs that the Lausanne agreement falls within the framework established by the regime, although some details may need to be worked out.

Larijani has reportedly recommended that MPs listen to Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the head of the Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, before taking a stance.

After eight days of continuous talks, the parties announced they had reached a framework agreement in Lausanne on April 2. The content of their consensus has been both hailed and criticized. Iranians celebrated on the streets following the announcement. The far right in Iran remains highly critical of the Iranian negotiating team.

While Iran’s Supreme Leader has not directly addressed the latest developments in the talks, he has been quoted by many of his spokesmen as being satisfied so far with the consensus obtained by the foreign minister and his team.
