At the 28th meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, Iran agreed to implement 139 of the 291 recommendations presented to it by other countries.

Iran issued a statement saying an additional 59 recommendations will also be implemented with some limitations, and among these are three items regarding the treatment of individuals based on their sexual orientation.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a periodic review of the human rights record of a UN member state, giving each state a chance to present how it has improved or plans to improve human rights conditions in its country. Accoridng to the United Nations, the cooperative process provides each state with a series of recommendations developed by the other states, and acceptance of recommendations means the subject state is committed to implementing them within the next four years.
