Iranian journalist protests against sentences with hunger strike
Mohammad Nourizad

Fatemeh Maleki, the wife of detained Iranian journalist Mohammad Nourizad, has expressed grave concern for her husband, who has been on hunger strike since last month.

Maleki reports that her husband is also refusing any visits or telephone calls.

Nourizad began a hunger strike last month to protest his being held under solitary confinement as well as the sentences he faces.

“I will refuse food, telephone contacts, visits or furloughs until my demands are met. I protest against all the sentences issued against me. I will continue this path until I get a result and everything that happens to me will be the responsibility of those who have issued sentences against me and have a role in keeping me imprisoned in Ward 2A,” Nourizad wrote in a letter addressed to Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi, Tehran’s Prosecutor.

He writes: “Keeping me in Ward 2A is illegal, and I must be transferred to the General Ward 350.”

Nourizad was arrested in December of 2009 charged with “insulting officials and propaganda against the regime.” He is sentenced to 3 and a half years in prison and 50 lashes.

Nourizad was convicted for writing a series of critical letters to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei for his role in crushing the post-election protests of 2009.
