Iran intelligence announces arrest of Jundallah cell

A cell of the militant Sunni group Jundallah has been exposed in Zahedan, according to the Intelligence department of Sisitan-Baluchistan Province in Southeast Iran.

Five Jundallah members have been arrested by authorities, Mehr News reports.

Four explosive vests and some ammunition were also recovered from the detainees, says the report. It quotes the intelligence department saying that cell members were planning terrorist attacks in order to disrupt the region’s security.

Jundallah is a militant Sunni group in southeastern Iran, which claims to fight for the rights of the Baluchis and the minority Sunnis in Sistan-Baluchistan, and has carried out numerous bombings and kidnappings in the region.

The Islamic Republic arrested Jundallah leader Abdolmalek Rigi in March 2010, and he was executed last June.
