Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi announced there were no “special arrests” yesterday, despite numerous reports on opposition websites about the widespread arrest of protester.
On Tuesday, opposition groups rallied their supporters to demand an end to the incarceration of opposition leaders MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi along with their wives.
Jafari Dowlatabadi told reporters: “There are no reports of anti-Revolutionary or rioting activities from yesterday. Of course some people intended to disturb public peace but were scattered by the dense presence of people and the prompt actions of the police.”
Meanwhile, opposition and human rights websites report that hundreds of people were arrested in Tehran.
On the subject of the February 14 protests, Dowlatabadi maintained that security and intelligence forces do not have to publicly state how many people were detained. He said their only responsibility is to inform the families of detainees.
Announcing the number of detainees, he explained, might be exploited by the opposition, he said, which would use it as evidence of its success.
Jafari Dowlatabadi also adamantly denied that the opposition leaders have been taken to a prison and insisted that Mousavi and Karroubi were still in their homes along with their wives.
Opposition websites have reported that the Iranian opposition leaders have been taken to Heshmatieh Prison in Tehran and the Mousavi and Karroubi children have also announced that all evidence strongly indicates that their parents are no longer at their homes.
The two opposition leaders were put under house arrest after calling the February 14 ralllies in support of Arab uprisings.
