Iranian opposition webiste says leaders in Tehran prison
MirHosein Mousavi – Mehdi Karroubi

Iran’s opposition leaders have been arrested and taken to Heshmatieh Prison in Tehran, Kaleme website reported today.

Citing a reliable source, Kaleme said MirHosein Mousavi, his wife Zahra Rahnavard, Mehdi Karroubi and his wife Fatemeh Karroubi were arrested on the order of the supreme officials of the Islamic Republic.

In the meantime, semi-offical FARS news agency denied the arrest of the two opposition leaders today and claimed that Mousavi and Karroubi are still in their homes but restricted from outside contact.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, Iran’s prosecutor general, announced today that the judiciary has taken steps against the opposition leaders and cut off all telephone and personal contact with the two leaders.

These are only the preliminary steps, he added, and further measures with follow as the situation requires.

Mousavi and Karroubi, along with their wives, were put under house arrest after they called for people to rally in support of recent Arab uprisings on February 14. The house arrest was progressively tightened until two days ago when, according to unofficial reports, the two couples were moved from their homes.

Iran’s former president Mohammad Khatami along with top reformist members of the clergy Ayatollahs Bayat Zanjani, Sanei and Dastgheib have condemned the treatment of the opposition leaders and called for their immediate release.

The Coordination Council for the Green Path of Hope, the umbrella group speaking for the opposition forces has called a rally on March 1 to demand an end to the incarceration of the Zahra Rahnavard, MirHosein Mousavi, Fatemeh Karroubi and Mehdi Karroubi.
