Widespread arrest of protesters all across Iran

Iranian opposition and human rights groups report widespread arrest of protesters in yesterday’s street gatherings in Tehran and other major cities.

On Sunday, attempts by Iranians to gather on the streets in commemoration of the two people who were killed on the mass protests of Monday were largely blocked by a huge security force presence all across Tehran and other cities.

Rahana human rights organization reports that “hundreds” have been arrested in groups and transferred to various detention centres in Tehran.

In Rasht, arrest of 150 people has been reported by various sources and in Shiraz, where severe attacks from Basij forces were reported yesterday, at least 50 people were reportedly arrested.

Eyewitnesses have reported seeing dense groups of detainees along with their families in the various security police stations in Tehran.

Daneshjoo news, the website linked to student activists, reports the arrest of at least seven students in Tehran.

Kaleme website also reports that two other student activists Saideh Asgari and Farnaz Kamali were arrested yesterday and taken away in a security vehicle. Kaleme reports that their whereabouts is currently unknown.

A number of websites have also reported the arrest of Mohammad Sadeghi, son of Ayatollah Sadeghi Khakhali, a judge in the first Revolutionary courts after the 1979 Revolution in Iran. Kaleme reports that he was arrested in Enghelab Square and taken to an unknown location.

Despite reports of widespread arrests, Tehran security chief commanders announced that the situation in Tehran and all other cities was calm and without event yesterday, and while all international media are barred from covering street protests in Iran, state media has completely denied the exptent of street protests in the past week.
