Concern over opposition leaders under house arrest
MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard

Iran’s opposition is concerned about the complete news blackout surrounding opposition leader MirHosein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard.

Tahavolesabz website reports that since last Tuesday, Mousavi’s home has been under “complete blockade” with all contact severed.

Mousavi’s guards have reported that a number of security officers are stationed at the house to deny any access to the leader.

The opposition leader has been put under house arrest by order of the judiciary, the opposition website reports.

Mousavi’s daughters said two days ago that they have been denied any news about their parents. They couldn’t even be sure if their parents were still in the house or not.

“We are concerned that it is impossible to know what is going on behind the closed doors, the silence and the news blackout, and   we don’t knowwhat unimaginable actions they are taking against them,” Mousavi’s daughters told Jaras.

Meanwhile, Saham news reported that on Wednesday night a group of “thugs and hoodlums” gathered in front of opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi’s home. The pro-government crowd chanted slogans calling for the death of the two opposition leaders, Mousavi and Karroubi, as well as the moderate cleric Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani.

“The hoodlums remained in the neighbourhood until past midnight, disturbing the peace and creating fear and intimidation among the residents,” Saham news reports.

Verbal attacks against the two opposition leaders have suddenly been stepped up by the government, and in an unprecedented move, Iranian conservative MPs opened their session on Tuesday by calling for the execution of Mousavi and Karroubi for initiating the February 14 protests. The two men had called for rallies in support of the Arab uprisings.

The mass demonstrations on Monday marked the first time in the past year that the opposition has rallied people to the streets, proving the opposition Green Movement is still going strong.
