Iranian judiciary says no change in Mohammadi Ashtiani case
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani

Iranian judiciary announced on Monday that there has been no change in the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani denying reports that her death sentence was suspended, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

In another report published by Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA) head of Iranian parliament’s human rights committee Zohreh Elahian was said to have issued a letter addressed to the Brazilian President saying that the Mohammadi Ashtiani’s death sentence has been suspended after securing consent fron the family of the victim.

Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejei, spokesman for Iran’s judiciary denied the report and maintained that the family of the victim want the execution to be carried out.

The head of justice department of Eastern Azerbaijan, where Mohammadi Ashtiani is jailed, said Mohammadi Ashtiani still faces execution and Elahian’s statements were false.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was found guilty of adultery in 2006 and sentenced to death by stoning.

After a human rights campaign to stop her stoning gained international dimensions, Iranian authorities suspended the stoning sentence but maintained that Ashtiani still faced a hanging sentence because of complicity in the murder of her husband.

Iranian judiciary now maintains that her case has been submitted to a revision pending a final decision.
