Iranian jailed activists allowed visitors
Mehdieh Golrou – Bahareh Hedayat

Behareh Hedayat and Mehdieh Golrou, the two jailed student activists who were barred by Iranian judiciary from having any visitors were finally allowed a prison visit from their husbands yesterday.

Kaleme website reports that after a three-week information blackout, the families of the two activists were allowed to visit them in prison.

The two activists had issued separate messages from prison on the occasion of National Student Day in December which aroused adverse reactions from Iranian prison authorities.

Earlier Amin Ahmadian, Hedayat’s husband had told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that his wife had developed gall stones in prison and also that he had been unable to visit her in person for close to eight months.

Bahareh Hedayat is an executive member of Iran’s largest student organization, Dafttr-e Tahkim-e Vahdat and was arrested in December of 2009 and sentenced to 9.5 years in prison which was also confirmed in the appellate court in August.

She is charged with “assembly and collusion against the regime”, “insulting the president and the leader” and “propaganda against the regime.”

Mehdieh Golrou is a member of the Council for Defense of Education Rights and was also arrested in December of 2009. She was sentenced to two years and four months in prison for “propaganda against the regime as well as assembly and collusion to disrupt national security.”

And earlier suspended sentence of one year imprisonment for similar charges has also been added to her most recent sentence.

In the widespread protests to the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the 2009 presidential elections, scores of student activists were arrested and sentenced to heavy prison terms.
