The release of household and industrial waste into the rivers and wetlands of Gilan province has seriously compromised the aquatic life.
The head of Gilan Shilat said on Sunday September 13 that the pollution has disturbed spawning by fish and the regeneration of aquatic life.
ISNA reports that according to Eshagh Shaabani, a high percentage of the spawned fish die in the rivers each year due to the pollution caused by household and industrial waste.
Meanwhile, unregulated and excessive removal of sand from the bed of many rivers in the province is destroying important breeding sites for fish.
Gilan Province in northern Iran is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, and waste from its rivers is passed directly into the lake, amplifying the effects of river pollution.
