The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reports that Mirdamadi was released on Monday July 27 on a three-day furlough.

Mirdamadi, who left Iran after the 2009 election protests and was residing in France, returned to Iran after the victory of reformist president Hassan Rohani. Mirdamadi’s passport was confiscated at the airport and his was interrogated on several occasions until he was finally arrested last May.

Mirdamadi was sentenced to one year and five years respectively for the charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security”. His sentence was reduced to three years in the appeals court.

Sarajeddin Mirdamadi is the maternal cousin of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. In 1999 and 2003, he was Deputy Director General of the Elections at the Ministry of Interior in Mohammad Khatami’s government.
