More than 900 scholars from universities around the world have issued a powerful statement condemning Israel’s military assault on Iran, denouncing it as a violation of international law and a grave threat to regional stability, democracy, and civilian life. The signatories, expressing solidarity with the Iranian people—not the ruling regime—warn that the attacks are fueling chaos and undermining prospects for peace. Below is the complete text of the statement:
Stop the war on Iran!
Stop the war on Iran! For peace, justice and democracy
Tehran and many other Iranian cities are reeling under Israeli attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians, while destroying residential areas and vital civilian infrastructures such as hospitals. The catastrophic targeting of nuclear installations, and gas and oil depots and refineries is causing irreparable ecological and human damage.
Millions of terrified and traumatized ordinary Iranians have fled the capital after Israel’s Minister of Defense, echoed by President Trump, threatened that “Tehran will burn.” Others are left behind defenceless. Netanyahu and Trump are dragging the US into Israel’s illegal war on Iran, which will cause more destruction and further destabilize the Middle East for the foreseeable future.
Israel’s war on Iran is yet another blatant violation of international law by a state led by a war criminal against whom the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant. By launching the attacks during Iran’s negotiations with the United States about its nuclear program, Israel has deliberately undermined peaceful diplomacy. This aggression is also a calculated attempt to deflect attention from the ongoing genocide it is committing in Gaza, and to unleash a cascade of catastrophes that aim to turn Iran into a failed state.
We denounce Israel’s war on Iran—not out of support for the country’s ruling elite and its domestic and foreign policies, but in solidarity with its people. Iranians have the right and the capacity to shape their own future, and we believe that Israel’s war on Iran is a grave danger to democracy and popular sovereignty as it fuels securitization and suppression of dissent. The Middle East is replete with tragic cases of societies descending into chaos following foreign interventions: Libya, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan.
Iranians’ courage and determination have been repeatedly demonstrated during frequent protests by women, workers, pensioners, ethnic minorities, and environmental activists, and most recently during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising. These movements have successfully challenged the Islamic Republic’s authoritarianism, showing their capacity to envision and create a different future of their own.
We stand with the grass roots associations, organizations, and activists in Iran that are calling for an immediate stop to Israel’s war. We call on everyone who believes in peace, justice and democracy to take a public stance against Israel’s genocide in Gaza and war. We urge everyone to join protests, and to pressure political representatives and institutions to demand an immediate stop to these acts of aggression and to stop President Trump from dragging the US into a new disastrous war for regime change.
