170 workers and pensioners from the Haft Tapeh Sugar Factory in Khuzestan have been staging a sit-in on company property since Saturday July 4.

ILNA reports that the protests include 100 current workers and 70 retired employees of the factory who have not been paid for five months.

The workers also report that their insurance premiums have not been paid to the Social Security Fund.

Numerous production units across Iran have been suffering in recent years from the international sanctions and poor management, leading to repeated labour protests mostly over the nonpayment of wages.

The Haft Tapeh Sugar Cane Workers’ Syndicate, which is one of the most active independent trade unions in Iran, organized numerous protests in the past decade to protect the rights of its members.
