The world powers have reached agreement on the mechanism to restore UN sanctions on Iran in case it violates any the terms of the prospective final nuclear deal that is due by June 30.
The agreement brings the parties closer to a possible deal with Iran, since Iran has insisted on the complete removal of all sanctions once the agreement is in force, as opposed to a gradual removal.
Reuters reports that the world powers have agreed on a sanctions “snapback” by which “suspected breaches by Iran would be taken up by a dispute-resolution panel, likely including the six powers and Iran, which would assess the allegations and come up with a non-binding opinion.”
The IAEA is charged with providing the world powers with continued reports to enable them assess Iran’s compliance with the terms of the agreement.
The report indicates that this new agreement is tentative because it has only been approved by the six world powers, not by Iran.
