Landmine explosions kill five border officials

Five border officials in Kermanshah were killed on Monday March 30 after triggering landmines left over from the Iran-Iraq War.

ISNA reports that the incident occurred on Monday morning in Soomar, near the Qasr Shirin border with Iraq.

The commander told reporters that heavy rainfall had shifted some of the mines onto the roads, which caused the vehicle carrying the border officers to explode this morning.

In March, five students were injured after walking onto land mines in the border regions of Ilam.
Iran’s border regions with Iraq are heavily polluted with land mines left from the war that ended in 1988.
