Official defends detained leaders’ level of health care

Mohammad Javad Larijani

The head of Iran’s Human Rights Commission says the medical needs of the opposition leaders held under house arrest are being provided for by the security forces, adding that they also have the possibility of traveling within the country.

Mohammad Javad Larijani spoke to the Mehr News Agency regarding the continued house arrest of MirHosein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi. Asked whether the Human Rights Commission has received any reports regarding these individuals and their situation under house arrest, he replied that any person’s house arrest must have a legal basis. The order, he said, can be issued by a judge or the Supreme Council of National Security could impose certain limitations on an individual’s liberties, and the three branches of government would then be responsible to carry it out.

He added that he has never visited the leaders under house arrest.

Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi have been under house arrest since February of 2011, and on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of their arrest, the Human Rights Defenders Centre once again challenged the legality of their situation.

Mohammad Javad Larijani said the opposition leaders have no difficulty in accessing medical treatment and said they also have the possibility of traveling within the country.

Reports from opposition websites indicate that these figures are only allowed rare visits to the hospital and do not receive sufficient medical care.
