New U.S. talks set as hardliners condemn Geneva stroll

Bilateral talks between Iran and the U.S. will continue on January 23 and 24 in Zurich at the level of deputy foreign ministers. Also, the latest report from the IAEA confirms that Iran’s nuclear stockpile has been reduced.

Reuters reports that the U.S. delegation is headed by Wendy Sherman, the U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs. Helga Schmidt, the deputy head of EU foreign affairs, will also be present.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with U.S. State Secretary John Kerry last week and took a stroll in the streets of Geneva. While both sides reported their talk was constructive, hardliners in Iran slammed the foreign minister for his promenade with Kerry.

Rejanews commented on Yukiya Amano’s report for the International Atomic Energy Agency which confirms the reduction of Iran’s nuclear stockpile, writing that the price of Zarif and Kerry’s fifteen-minute stroll in Geneva was the destruction of 70 thousand kilograms of five-percent-enriched uranium.

The report claims that the reduction exceeds Iran’s commitments in the Geneva deal of November 2013 and describes it as a squandering of the efforts of Iranian scientists.

Zarif has been quoted as saying that the talks are on track with a general understanding about Iran’s right to have its nuclear program and have all sanctions removed.
