The extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility on Monday December 29 for the killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander, Hamid Taghavi, in Iraq.
AFP reports that a social networking site used by ISIS has posted an image of Taghavi accompanied by three other individuals. Taghavi's face is reportedly marked by a red circle and a caption identifies his as "an apostate that was killed in Samarra by ISIS forces."
Earlier reports indicate that Commander Taghavi of the IRGC was killed by an ISIS sniper on Saturday evening in Samarra.
On Sunday the IRGC announced that Commander Taghavi was killed during an advisory mission in Samarra. His remains were transferred to Iran and his funeral was held on Monday in Tehran.
The IRGC has confirmed its presence in Iraq offering advice and training to Iraqi government forces.
