Iranian nurses gathered in front of the president’s office on Sunday December 14 to protest the large pay gap between physicians and nurses.
ILNA reports that a group of nurses from Tehran, Isfahan, Gilan and Mazandaran provinces gathered in the capital with banners saying: “Five percent of the health service team receives 95 percent of the revenues” and “We protest against injustice.”
It is estimated that doctors are paid 100 percent more than nurses in hospitals and clinics. While nurses should not to be working more than 167 hours per month, they are currently working an average of 280 to 300 hours.
Nurses are calling for a review of their pay rates and a solution to the nursing shortage in hospitals.
While Iran faces a nursing shortage in its hospitals, it has been reported that about 1,000 nurses leave the country each year for better working conditions in neighbouring countries.
