Insurance aid requested for treatment of land mine victims

Iran’s Ministry of Health has been urged to provide land mine victims with the health insurance needed to help them recover as best possible from their injuries, as land mines continue to plague residents in the provinces of Khuzestan, Kurdistan, Western Azerbaijan, Ilam and Kermanshah.

Leftover land mines from the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s continue to claim casualties in these provinces.

Ramin Kordi, the hospital chief in Kermanshah, told ILNA on Tuesday November 4 that Health Minister Hassan Hashemi visited six children, some of whom were land mine victims, last Saturday at Noor Afshar Hospital, and he was told that the children, like most land mine victims, do not have the necessary health insurance.

Kordi stressed that these victims need health insurance that covers long-term treatments so they can recover. What’s needed, said Kordi, are services for rehabilitation, physiotherapy services and speech therapy.

Hundreds of people in Iran have been injured or killed by land mines since 1988, when the war ended between Iran and Iraq.
