Iranians killed in Syria reportedly guarded shrine

Four Iranians who were said to be part of the “defenders of the Shrine of Saint Zeynab” have been killed in Syria.

The Tasnim website reported that the funeral will be held in Mashhad on Thursday May 15 for the four Iranians killed in Syria: Abbasali Hamidi, Ali Hosseiny, Ghorban Hassani and Hassan Ghassemidana.

Daneshjoo News also reports that two Afghans living in Iran were also killed in Syria: Ahmad Hosseiny and Hossein Mahmoudi.

The two were reportedly part of the Fatemiyoon Battalion in Syria. Hosseiny and Mahmoudi were laid to rest in Qom.

The report indicates that the Fatemiyoon Battalion is comprised of Afghan Shias who, alongside a number of other battalions, provide protection for the Shrine of Zeynab and Shia neighbourhoods in Syria in the midst of the Syrian conflict.
