Prosecutor says opposition leaders to remain under house arrest
Iranian opposition leaders

Iran’s Prosecutor General and spokesman for the judiciary says no decision has been made to end the house arrest of MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei told a press conference: “In the election of 2009, a number of people caused injury to the regime. In the process, a number of people and Basij members were killed. Therefore, there was a great injury that was exploited by the country’s enemies.”

He said the judiciary has actually treated these opposition leaders with great mercy, and they could have been sentenced to a more severe punishment.

MirHosein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi have been under house arrest since February 2011 for challenging the 2009 elections and triggering widespread protests.

Mohseni Ejei said: “There has been no change in the decision to put these individuals under house arrest.”

“If a group of people wants these people released, a larger group wants them to receive the maximum sentence,” the prosecutor general claimed. He said that he has received a petition to that effect.

On Sunday April 27, the wife of Mehdi Karroubi, Fatemeh Karroubi, told Saham News: “My husband’s position regarding the 2009 events is clear and unchanged, and it is on the public record and it will be proven in time.”

Mehdi Karroubi has stated that he is fully prepared to stand trial in an official proceeding to face the charges against him and to state his position with regard to what he has called “the engineering of the 2009 election, the slaying of the republic aspect of the system, and the suspension of people’s  rights that are guaranteed under the constitution.”
