UNESCO chief expresses concerns over Iranian heritage sites

Irina Bukova, the Director General of UNESCO, visited historic sites and buildings in Isfahan today Monday April 28, 2014.

Her visit coincided with an outdoor exhibition being held in the city of Isfahan, which involved large banners and loudspeakers and various booths in Naqshe Jahan Square, which was one of the first sites in Isfahan to be registered on the UNESCO list of heritage sites.

Bukova reportedly expressed concern about the event being held on this site, which she referred to as a precious museum.

City organizers had apparently made an effort to clear the banners, scaffoldings and loudspeakers from the square as soon as they heard of the UNESCO chief’s arrival.

Bukova began a five-day tour of Iran on Saturday. She visited Golestan Palace in Tehran and expressed concern about the Justice Department building towering behind the palace, another Iranian heritage site on the UNESCO list.

Bukova is scheduled to also visit Fars and Kerman provinces.
