Iran lodges complaint against US over UN envoy
Hamid Aboutalebi

Spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry announced that Iran is in the process of filing a complaint against the United States for not issuing a visa for its new envoy to the United Nations.

ISNA reports that Marzieh Afkham said the complaint will be made through mechanisms in place at the UN through the committee tasked with implementation of the UN headquarters agreement with the host country.

Afkham stated that the US decision not to issue a visa to Iran’s UN envoy is a violation of international regulations” and “against the Headquarters Agreement between the UN and the United States.”

The US government has announced that it will not allow Hamid Aboutalebi, Iran’s new UN envoy to enter the United States. The US says Aboutalebi was involved in the American embassy hostage crisis of 1979 in Iran. Aboutalebi says he was not directly involved in the hostage taking and was just a translator.

Aboutalebi has served as Iran’s ambassador to Italy, Belgium and Australia and has been now selected to replace Mohammad Khazai, Iran’s envoy in the United Nations.
