Jailed activist refuses food in bid to help dervishes
Kasra Nouri

Jailed Iranian blogger and activist Kasra Nouri has begun a hunger strike in jail to protest the authorities’ refusal to address the demands of jailed dervishes and also to protest the continued neglect of their medical needs.

The Majzooban Noor website reports that Nouri had announced last Wednesday that if the authorities continued their neglect of the jailed dervishes and their demands in ward 350 of Evin Prison, he would begin a hunger strike in support of his jailed peers.

Nouri has referred to the dismal condition of a number of dervishes and their jailed representatives, identified as Hamid Moradi, Farshid Yadollahi, Mostafa Daneshjoo, Amir Eslami, Mostafa Abdi, Omid Behrouzi, Reza Entesari and Afshin Karampour; and he writes: “I urge the officials to avoid inflaming the situation and stop inflicting further injustices to dervishes. If no action is taken to provide medical treatment to my brethren by the end of Saturday, I will begin a hunger protest against such lack of action.”

Kasra Nouri is spending his second year in jail in Nezam Prison in Fars Province. Last year he went on a hunger strike that was also to protest the condition of his peers in Evin Prison, and he ended the strike after 90 days when the dervishes were finally removed from solitary confinement.
