Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi received France’s Officier des Arts et des Lettres medal from French Culture Minister Aurelie Filipetti on February 27.
There are three categories of medals given out to people named to the Order of Arts and Letters, the top being Commander, the second being Officer and the third being Knight. The French Art and Literature Association bestows the honour on influential literary and artistic figures.
Farhadi, who won the Oscar for best foreign-language film for A Separation in 2012, made his last film, The Past, in France.
The Past has also won international acclaim and reaped a best-actress award for Berenice Bijou at the Cannes Film Festival.
Farhadi has signed on to make another film with a European company.
