Environment Dept. wants authority to punish polluters
Massoumeh Ebtekar

The head of Iran’s Department of the Environment announced plans to change regulations regarding air quality, saying that violating some of these rules should lead to prosecution under the criminal code.

In an interview with ISNA, Massoumeh Ebtekar said: “The former legislation regarding clean air has several weaknesses, and we are trying to remedy these deficiencies and trying to strengthen the law.”

Ebtekar said the legislation needs to give greater authority to the Department of the Environment to act against those who violate regulations.

Ebtekar maintained that the proposed new bill is more up-to-date and practical and he expressed every hope that it will soon be approved by Parliament.

Iran’s major cities have been wrestling with serious air pollution in recent years, with Tehran having only three days of clean air in the past year.
