Supreme Leader pessimistic as nuclear talks recommence
Ayatollah Khamenei

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei told a gathering in Tabriz that he is not optimistic about the nuclear negotiations but neither is he opposed to them.

Iranian media report that Ali Khamenei said that despite his lack of optimistim about the outcome of these talks, he will not oppose their continuation.

Ali Khamenei’s website has quoted Iran’s leader as follows: “Some officials of the previous and current administrations think that if the nuclear issue is resolved, the dispute will be over. I said in my speech earlier that I am not optimistic about these talks and they will not reach a resolution but I have nothing against them.”

In December, one day before the last round of talks between Iran and the world powers, Ayatollah Khamenei had said that he was not optimistic about the negotiations. He added, however, that “the experience could not be harmful.”

He had also expressed support for Iran’s negotiating team, emphasizing that “they are acting in good faith for the country and they wish to accomplish something for the sake of their country” and they should have all the prayers and support of the country.

The new round of talks between Iran and the 5+1 begins tomorrow in Vienna.
