Turkish leader visiting Iran to talk business with top officials

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in Tehran last night with his delegation and met with the Iranian President Hassan Rohani on Wednesday morning.

IRNA reports that he was welcomed at Mehrabad Airport by Amir Hossein Abdollahian, the Iranian deputy foreign minister.

Turkish media report that the Erdoğan is accompanied by his foreign minister and ministers of economy, energy, development and culture as well as the head of the Anatoli News Agency.

Erdoğan had announced that topics of discussion on this trip will include the Syrian issue, the temporary suspension of sanctions against Iran and economic relations with Iran.

Other reports indicate that the Turkish prime minister is set to meet with Iran’s Supreme Leader as well as President Hassan Rohani.

IRNA reports that the Joint Economic Commission between the two neighbouring countries will begin its activities after a two-year pause.

As one of Iran’s chief oil customers, Turkey used to buy 180 thousand barrels a day prior to the sanctions. The number has currently dropped to 105 thousand.

Turkey is also a top consumer of Iranian natural gas, and Turkish media have reported that Ordogan is going to call for a more competitive rate compared to what Azerbaijan and Russia charge.
