Belgian chemical firm Tessenderlo is shipping fertilizer to Iran in the coming weeks, the first potash shipment to Iran in two years and a sign of easing sanctions.
Reuters reports that while there had not been a ban on fertilizer, the restrictions on dealing with Iran’s financial sector had severely limited trade with the country.
In September, an Iranian agricultural company called for bids for the purchase of 210,000 tons of superphosphate fertilizer and 60,000 tons of potassium sulfate.
Reuters reports that Tessenderlo will be purchasing the products from Bulgaria and China, and the first batch will be sent to Iran by the end of January.
The Geneva agreement that was reached in November between Iran and the 5+1 includes the easing of sanctions on Iran in exchange for Iran’s suspension of certain nuclear activities.
