UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has once again announced his support for Iran’s participation in the Geneva 2 talks about the Syrian conflict, adding that officials are considering an official invitation.
AFP reports that the Secretary General emphasized Iran’s key role in the issue but added that consensus has not been reached regarding Iran’s participation in the talks.
The U.S. Secretary of State announced that Iran could be a part of the talks if it recognizes the decisions reached at the Geneva 1 talks for the establishment of a transition government.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said, however, that Iran will participate in the Geneva 2 talks only if there are no preconditions.
Iran has been a supporter of the Beshar Assad government since the beginning of the conflict in Syria and has refused any action that excludes Assad from the final solution to achieve peace.
