A Zahedan representative in Iranian Parliament has warned the legislative body about the high rate of unemployment in Sistan-Baluchistan and the growing problems of families in the southeastern province.
Hosseinali Shahriyari told Parliament: “The unemployment rate in Sistan-Baluchistan province has reached 50 percent, creating serious difficulties for families across the province.”
The Zahedan Press website reports that Shahriyari blamed the high frequency of drought in the past 15 years, emphasizing that most villagers are hanging on only with the support of government benefits.
Shahriyari added that infrastructure projects in the province have been left unfinished, exacerbating problems in the region. The Zahedan MP referred to a number of half-finished projects in his report to Parliament, including the Chabahar-Zahedan-Mashhad Railway project, the Sistan-Baluchistan Gas Access Project, the Chabahar Petrochemical Project and many dam projects.
