Rohani administration after lifting ban on Facebook

Fatemeh Rahbar, a conservative Tehran MP, reported that presidential aide Mohammadreza Sadegh has met with the representatives of the six ministers who are members of the High Council of Cyberspace to discuss ending the blocking of Facebook for web users in the country.

Rahbar told the Fars News Agency: “Last week, Mohammadreza Sadegh, the president’s aide, met with representatives of the six ministers who are members of the High Council of Cyberspace (Ministers of Science, Communications and IT, Culture and Guidance, Intelligence, Justice and Education) with an agenda to coordinate  possible open access to Facebook for internet users.”

Rahbar, who is opposed to free access to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, challenged the meeting saying it is not yet clear what happened in the meeting.

She questioned the motives of presidential aide Mohammadreza Sadegh, saying it has to be clarified whether Sadegh is acting under express instructions from the president or on his own initiative.

Rahbar stated that she plans to pursue the matter in Parliament.
