Supreme Leader endorses Geneva nuclear agreement

The Iranian leader has expressed his support for the agreement reached in Geneva with the 5+1 over Iran’s nuclear activities.

Ayatollah Khamenei responded to a letter from President Hassan Rohani regarding the developments in the talks, welcoming the agreement and stressing that the negotiators must “resist against excessive demands” of world powers.

Reports indicate that Rohani informed Ayatollah Khamenei on Sunday morning about the details of the agreement, adding that: “your revolutionary children managed to take the first step in the difficult and complex negotiations in a manner that the world powers recognized the Iranian nation’s right to the exploitation of nuclear power and enrichment, which they had tried to deny up to now.”

Rohani also mentioned the suspension of further sanctions as another achievement of the negotiating team.

Rohani also writes that the Geneva agreement is “in the interest of all the countries in the region as well as peace and global progress toward a win-win approach to negotiations.”

In a brief response, Ayatollah Khamenei welcomed the agreement, writing: “The achievements you have outlined make the negotiating team worthy of praise and gratitude and can become the basis for further intelligent measures.”

The agreement also released some Iranian assets that had been frozen in foreign banks.

Iran has agreed to stop all enrichment beyond the five percent grade and to dismantle its stockpile of 20 percent enriched uranium.

Despite support from the leader, there has been some controversy in Parliament about the deal, with some MPs calling on the president to explain the details of the agreement in Parliament.
