Scores of members of a Salafi Muslim group in Egypt attacked the Cairo residence of Iranian chargé d’affaires Mojtaba Amani but they were held back by police as they attempted to force their way in.
The Anatoli News Agency reports that the demonstrators pelted the house with rocks and fireworks after the building’s security personnel kept them from entering. They also reportedly sprayed the walls with anti-Shia slogans.
Salafis are rejecting the Iran-Egypt rapprochement of recent months and have also shown their resistance to the arrival of the first group of Iranian tourists to Egypt in more than 30 years.
Relations between Iran and Egypt were severed in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution, but since the election of Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi, the two countries have shown some interest in rebuilding those relations.
