Reformist says Iran should harness experience of detained leaders
Abdollah Nouri

Senior reformist figure Abdollah Nouri is calling on the Islamic Republic establishment to take advantage of the experience and popularity of opposition leaders MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi to help resolve the country’s growing problems.

Kaleme reported on Tuesday March 5 that in a meeting with the children of MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, Abdollah Nouri said the government should use experienced and able leaders and concerned officials to tackle the current problems.

Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi have been under house arrest since February 2011 and barred from any public contact.

Nouri, a former interior minister in the reformist government of Mohammad Khatami, said people who have been active since the beginning of the Revolution and proven their loyalty and concern for the country and national interests on many occasions, should be regarded as the best resource to resolve the country’s problems.

He stressed that rather than considering Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi to be problems and persecuting their families, the establishment should avail itself of their experience and their popularity among the people.

The daughters of Mousavi and Rahnavard were subjected to repeated summonses and brief arrests in the past month. They have been vocal advocates for their parents’ freedom and have repeatedly expressed concern for the wellbeing of their parents under house arrest.

Mehdi Karroubi’s son was also subjected to similar treatment by the authorities.
