Reformist figure given leave from Evin Prison
Mohsen Mirdamadi

The Norooz website reported on Wednesday February 27 that the secretary general of the reformist Islamic Iran Participation Front has been temporarily released from Evin Prison.

Mohsen Mirdamadi was arrested after the controversial presidential election of 2009, which was followed by allegations of fraud that resulted in a widespread crackdown on reformist factions both in the establishment and also among the millions of protesters that joined mass demonstrations to challenge the election outcome.

Mirdamadi was charged with “assembly and collusion with the intention of disrupting national security and propaganda activities against the regime” for which he was given a six-year in jail and a 10-year ban from political and media activities.

Mirdamadi has served as an MP and the head of the national security and foreign policy commission. Since 2003, the Guardian Council has disqualified him from running for election.

He is also the director of the Norooz newspaper, a publication linked to the Islamic Iran Participation Front, which was shut down in 2002, resulting in a six-month jail term for Mirdamadi.

The reformist activist became secretary of the IIPF in 2005, and the organization was outlawed after the 2009 election protests.
