Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami and his wife have met with the daughters of MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, the Iranian opposition leaders who have been under house arrest since February of 2011.
Kaleme reports that on Thursday February 21, Khatami met with the Mousavi daughters and expressed his concern regarding their recent harsh treatment by Iranian authorities.
Khatami called for those in power to act with greater “tact and respect for the law and ethics” in the future.
Last week, Kokab Mousavi, the eldest daughter of the opposition leaders, was recalled to Evin Prison court and held for three hours of questioning. Prior to that, Narges and Zahra Mousavi were also summoned and held for questioning.
Narges Mousavi has revealed to Jaras that they have been repeatedly subjected to various forms of persecution by the authorities in recent years, which led to her separation from her husband. She reported that in the latest episode, her brother-in-law was assaulted by a security officer and she herself was threatened with assault in front of her underage children.
The Mousavi daughters have been very vocal about the fate of their parents, who have been under house arrest for the past two years without any formal charges being laid against them.
Following the 2009 presidential election, the two reformist candidates, MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, made allegations of vote fraud that led to widespread street protests.
The government cracked down on protesters and, in the political arena, reformists were heavily marginalized, and many of their top leaders were jailed.
Khatami, a former reformist president, said during his visit with the Mousavis: “We can forgive the injustices and slanders directed at us but we cannot close our eyes to the fate of our country. We are concerned for Iran.”
