Ahmadinejad invites Mursi to attend summit in Tehran
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly called newly-elected Egyptian president Mohammad Mursi to wish him success in his mandate and invite him to attent the NAM meeting in Tehran in August.

The Egyptian state news agency reported that the call was apparently the first direct contact between the two leaders since Mursi became president.

Iran and Egypt have not had any diplomatic relations for the past 30 years because following the 1979 Revolution, the Iranian government became critical of  Egypt’s recognition of Israel.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reportedly invited Mursi to the NAM summit that will take place in August, the report indicated. It is not clear whether Mursi has accepted the offer.

Recently Mursi denied giving an interview to the semi-official Iranian news agency Fars in which he was quoted as saying that he was interested in restoring relations with Iran. The Egyptian president’s spokesman has announced that Mursi is planning to file a suit against Fars news agency over this incident.
