China wants Iran to show “flexibility”

China has urged Iran to show flexibility and pragmatism at the coming nuclear talks in Moscow.

The Associated Press reports that Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today, June 8, and said that despite some progress in nuclear talks, big differences remain between Tehran and the world powers.

In a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement, Hu is quoted as telling Ahmadinejad: “China hopes the Iranian side can weigh up the situation, take a flexible and pragmatic approach, have serious talks with all six related nations, and enhance dialogues and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency so as to ensure the tensions can be eased through negotiations.”

He reportedly added that China will continue to “play a constructive role in settling the issue through peaceful means.”

Ahmadinejad reportedly said that Iran hopes that tensions surrounding the nuclear talks will ease and good relations will be maintained among all parties.

China has opposed unilateral U.S. and EU sanctions against Iran and stressed the need for a diplomatic solution to the nuclear disputes.
