U.S. wants firm action from Iran

The United States has called on Iran to take “urgent practical steps” to build confidence about its nuclear program during talks with the G5+1.

The Associated Press reports that Robert Wood, the U.S. representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Monday in Vienna: “We remain concerned by Iran’s persistent failure to comply with its non-proliferation obligations.”

He added: “We seek a sustained process that produces concrete results, and call on Iran to take urgent practical steps to build confidence and lead to compliance with all its international obligations.”

An Iranian delegation met with the G5+1 representatives on April 14 in Istanbul, and both sides agreed that the talks were positive and constructive.

They are to meet again in Baghdad on May 23 to discuss the contentious issues in detail.

European Union representatives made their own announcement, calling for the suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, the Iranian envoy to the IAEA, said Iran will not halt its uranium enrichment, which it says is used for producing fuel, not for developing weapons.
